IES (Indian Engineering Services) is a Civil Services Examination and is conducted by UPSC every year. The examination is conducted for recruitment to the various posts and it is based on the candidate’s performance in all the three rounds. It is conducted only for the core engineering fields i.e. Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Electrical & Telecommunication Engineering. IES Syllabus and exam pattern is provided in this article.
- IES all the three rounds are as follows
1. IES Preliminary Examination (objective in nature)
2. IES Main Examination (conventional in nature)
3. IES Personality Test. - IES Prelims stage contains 2 papers- General Studies & Engineering Aptitude Paper (paper 1) and Engineering Discipline Paper (paper 2)
- Engineering Discipline paper consists of 4 specializations i.e. Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electrical & Telecommunication Engineering (ECE) and candidates can choose any of the engineering streams.
- Paper 1 and 2 are conducted in two different sessions.
- Duration of paper 1 is 2 hours and duration of paper 2 is 3 hours.
- The total marks allotted to Round 1 are 500 i.e. paper 1 consists of 200 marks and paper 2 is of 300 marks.
- IES syllabus for paper 1 is same for all the streams and paper 2 is different for different fields.
- After clearing Round 1 i.e. Preliminary round, candidates will qualify for IES Round 2.
IES Exam Pattern for Prelims
IES exam pattern (distribution of marks) for preliminary examination is same for all the streams in the IES. Other important detail about IES exam pattern is mentioned below
- IES Prelims questions are objective in nature.
- The distribution of marks is 200 (for paper 1) +300 (for paper 2) which makes it a total of 500 marks.
- The duration of paper 1 is 2 hours and 3 hours for paper 2 in IES Prelims.
Subject-wise IES Exam Pattern:
- Civil Engineering
The preliminary IES examination for Civil branch (civil engineering) consists of 2 subjects i.e. General Knowledge and Civil Engineering. The details of IES Exam Pattern for Civil Engineering is mentioned below:
Paper | Time Duration | Marks |
